Why do I feel exhausted and wide awake at the same time after traveling?

Hi Siham, thank you for the interesting question.

This issue is very common. The main reason for it is because your body clock hasn’t caught up with your new time zone yet. Your circadian rhythm is an internal 24-hour clock that regulates sleep, hormones, body temperature, appetite, and digestion. When you cross several time zones quickly, this rhythm can become temporarily misaligned with the local day and night. This is what we call jet lag.

The good news is that there are simple ways to help your body adjust:

☀️Get natural daylight: Light is one of the strongest signals for resetting your body clock. Try to spend time outdoors at the appropriate time of day at your destination.

😴 Follow the local schedule: Try to sleep and wake according to local time rather than your home schedule. Avoid long daytime naps if they make nighttime sleep harder.

🚶 Stay active: Light activity during the day can help you stay alert and reinforce your new daily rhythm.

☕ Time your caffeine: Caffeine may help with daytime sleepiness, but avoid it later in the day so it doesn’t interfere with nighttime sleep.

💧 Stay hydrated and eat regularly: Dehydration and irregular meals can add to fatigue and digestive discomfort, so drink enough fluids and gradually adapt to local mealtimes.

With the right light exposure, sleep routine, activity, and daily habits, your internal clock can gradually synchronize with your new time zone.
