I’ve been advised to take a vitamin D supplement, but what’s the best way to take it for good absorption?
Hi Jana, thank you for your interesting question.
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means your body absorbs it better when you take it with a meal or snack that contains some healthy fat. You can usually take it at any convenient time of day, with oil, avocado for example.
Try to take it consistently as part of your daily routine. If you’re also taking calcium or other supplements, your healthcare professional can advise you on whether they should be taken together or at different times.
Remember, more isn’t always better with vitamin D. Taking very high doses without medical advice can lead to excessive calcium levels and other health problems. If you’ve been prescribed a specific dose to correct vitamin D deficiency, follow that treatment plan and any recommended blood-test monitoring.
